The city and county seat of Mardin is located in southeast Turkey. It is situated on the southern flanks of a wide highland that climbs to a height of 3,450 feet (1,052 metres) and looks out over a sizable limestone plateau. The area experiences hot summers and freezing winters, and it receives more rainfall than the lowland plains.
The highland’s top is crowned by a Roman castle that was destroyed and rebuilt in the Middle Ages, serving as a reminder of Mardin’s former status as the ancient Marida (Marde, Maride, or Merida). Marida was conquered by the Seljuq Turks in the late eleventh century, and Sultan Selim I added it to the Ottoman Empire in 1516. Both the 14th-century Sultan sa Medresesi and the Seljuq-era Ulu Cami (Great Mosque), both religious buildings, are still intact today.
With its centuries-long history, Mardin has evolved into a major cultural and tourist destination, welcoming 2 million 700,000 visitors in 2022. President of the Mardin Tourism and Hoteliers Association, zgür Azad Gürgör, stated:
